I haven't really been asked any questions (yet) about DesTestMAX so I've gone right ahead and anticipated some.

When in MAX mode, the PLA address decoding logic simply does not allow access to the top 60K of memory. This was a design decision made by Commodore to make the C64 compatible with the MAX (Ultimax) console.
MAX mode cartridges take control of the CPU right at power-up/reset thus bypassing the usual kernal startup routines. This allows us to start the testing process entirely from the cartridge-ROM without the need for any working RAM, ROMs, CIAs or the SID in the computer. Such an arrangement offers the best chance to at least get some signs of life from an otherwise dead C64.
It is on the list. If I didn't release code until it was "done" then I'd never release anything (ask me how I know).
I think that a separate ROM image specifically designed to run as the kernal is the way to go: think "DesTestKernal " or something like that. Nowhere near as convenient as a cartridge but it will get the job done. Watch this space.
Yes. I have a few ideas for better and better memory tests (and possibly diagnostics in general). I'm looking forward to seeing what I come up with.
Several companies now make and distribute authorized and licensed versions of the DesTestMAX cartridge! Visit the Where To Buy page for the list of distributors and links to their websites.
